Marguerite Porter's Story

I don't even know where to begin! I can say that I am back in Ohio for family as well as medical reasons. Life has had it's ups and downs for me; there are things that I would change and things that happened for reasons!I'm really not so sure how much of my life I want to share right now. I have spent the last year as a student and will continue my education once the medical issues are somewhat resolved. I'll be paying student loans with my social security checks if there is any left by the time I'm 72 to collect! If I ever grow up; I want to be a Social Worker with a Masters and I want to work with and for the elderly and caregivers. Having been a caregiver the last 8 or 9 years, I really see the need.I am currently not working tho I hope to remedy that soon , as well. This last move was physically and emotionally very hard. It will be worth it in the end. Over the last 40 years; I have raised 3 wonderful children and have 5 awesome grands! I have been married 3 times and no longer hold with that third time is the charm thing! as ol blue eyes sang...mistakes; i've made a few ...but i did it my way! My dreams to race that 69 chevelle never came to pass for me because of moving out on graduation night, but my eldest son did it at Norwalk Raceway!!!! I never did become a teacher, but I was a trainer for our local Girl Scout Council for more than 5 years and loved every minute of it! I plan to use my Social Worker's credentials to lead workshops and have become a Wrap Around Facilitator thru the State of Michigan Dept of Human Services. I intend to bring that forward in Ohio as well. I found my birth mother in 2000 and my birth dad in 2001; full of mixed blessings. I look more like my mother than I care to admit! and WE are not aging well! I am grateful for finding both of them and for learning about my absolutely awesome heritage-I have discovered genealogy and love it!!!! --however; I really am grateful for having been raised by Lucy and Bill, warts and all, because I had opportunities that I never would have had if my birth parents had raised me. I am the eldest of my mother's 6 children and have met 4 of the 5 others including burying one of my sisters. I am also the eldest of my dad's 3 and have met my brother but not my sister. grandmother is still alive and kicking at 94. Grampa passed a few years ago -I had the chance to get to know him alittle; missed a lot by not growing up with him! I find that my wanderlust comes from him! Both of my paternal grands were gone before I found my dad. Thru my interest in genealogy, I have become a grave walker- I go to cemeteries and photograph tombstones for others across the country and world. I love it! And I have found relations of mine in over 14 cemeteries! I intro'd my mother to (dead) relatives she never knew about! There is alot to learn in a cemetery! My first husband , Danny, is my kids dad- I don't seem to have any photos of him on this computer-not sure why--anyhow we were together 26 years. He and I get along quite well now that we are no longer married. My second husband, Gordy-well; everyone is allowed a mistake! He had a wonderful home in the UP of Michigan on the Green Bay-if I could have kept the house without him, I might still be there! My last husband, Michael, with whom I am currently living, and I traveled to Hawaii--we didn't do the tourist stuff- he had lived there for 11 years and we want to go back! We checked out real estate etc before everything totally tanked here. My need to not be so far from my kids and my mother kept us from going--then, when we had done all of the tricks to get our animals there, we lost our house and had to move to Michigan onto my mother's property-which , in part, ended our marriage of 8 years. Before we lost the house, we also traveled to Panama. We could not have lived on just Michael's Social Security there. Panamanian law would not allow me to work as an Ex Pat. I was very much worried that there could be government upheaval and we would be stuck there-not to mention the whole wanting to be near to my kids and my mother thing!!!! I mean, Hawaii is a plane trip-Panama is a passport and shots! Now, we are trying to survive in Elyria on just his Social Security and it sucks!!!!! I feel like I have books to write within myself...so think about what you want your name to be to protect the innocent..or not so! If you have questions, I answer them ...but I am not sure what else to share freely. The Shangri La's sang "you can never go home anymore..." and in some ways they were spot on!
